Definition: Progressive or acute opacification of the natural lens.
Symptoms and signs:
- Decreased vision
- Poor night vision
- Monocular double vision
- Halos, glare and light sensitivity
- Fading or yellowing of colours
Surgical treatment : Phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. It’s the only treatment for cataract.
Technical surgery: phacoemulsification
- One-day surgery
- Local anaesthesia by eye drops
- Small corneal incision: 1,8 to 2,2 mm
- Fragmentation and aspiration of the natural lens with an ultrasonic hand-piece (phacoemulsificator).
Insertion of a foldable intra-ocular lens (IOL) that can:
- Allow only far or close vision (mono focal IOL)
